*A thought*:
The greatest deception in life is self-deception. David had deceived himself to such an extent that it took Nathan's barbed parable to bring him out into the open. "To thine own self be true, and it must follow as the night the day thou canst not then be false to any man" (Hamlet, Shakespeare).
